Embark on an exploration of the volcanic wonders of Terceira and experience the impressive geological landscapes that this region offers. The journey will take you through the natural jewels of the Azores, featuring the remarkable Algar do Carvão, the intriguing Gruta do Natal, and the captivating Furnas do Enxofre.
Day Trip to Volcanic Caves
Your adventure begins with a pickup from your hotel or a designated location in Angra do Heroísmo at the scheduled time. From there, we will set off towards the volcanic caves of Terceira in an off-road vehicle or a van, surrounded by lush forests and vibrant hydrangea fields lining our path.
As we navigate through lesser-known trails and pause at hidden gems shared by our knowledgeable guides, we will reach the Guilherme Moniz crater, standing at 640 meters (2,099 feet). Here, you will witness the island’s key geological formations: the spectacular Algar do Carvão and the Gruta do Natal. A guided tour of these volcanic caves will allow you to explore their interiors and observe the rich Azorean flora, which includes holly, laurel, and moss.
During our exploration, each site's distinctive geological traits will unfold before you. Although commonly known as a cave, Algar do Carvão is actually the inner structure of an extinct volcano, presenting a geological marvel unlike any other. We will descend into the volcanic chimney to appreciate the thriving vegetation on its walls, the stunning stalactites, and the tranquil pool resting at the bottom.
In contrast, Gruta do Natal is a true lava tube created by flowing magma beneath the surface; we'll traverse its tunnels while uncovering insights about its geological origins.
Our journey will also take us to Furnas do Enxofre, renowned for its geothermal activity marked by fumaroles releasing sulfuric steam from the Earth’s depths. After an enriching 3 to 4-hour excursion exploring these extraordinary landscapes, we will return to the point of departure or to your hotel.
