Our journey will take us through the iconic Sassi di Matera, the ancient neighborhoods hewn from the rocky escarpments of the Murgia Materana. These areas have a fascinating history, having been populated since the Paleolithic era.
We will wander through the districts of Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, uncovering the captivating sites of this World Heritage city. Throughout our guided exploration, we will share insights into the formation of these districts and their historical transformations.
Highlighting our tour are visits to the Church of Santa Chiara, the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi, and the Cathedral of Matera, all displaying Apulian Romanesque architecture.
Following our guided tour, you'll have the opportunity to savor local delicacies during your personal lunch break. Afterward, if you wish, you can visit some of Matera's stunning rock churches (entrance not included), such as the Church of San Pietro Barisano, the Church of Santa Maria di Idris, and the Church of Santa Lucia alle Malve.
