Originally a strategic fortification for Lisbon's defense during the Islamic rule over the Iberian Peninsula, the Castelo dos Mouros fell into Christian hands when Alfonso Henriques, the first monarch of Portugal, seized it in the 12th century. Following this, a medieval village emerged within its walls.

By the end of the Muslim-Christian conflicts in the 15th century, both the castle and the village fell into disuse until the 19th century revival led by King Ferdinand II, who undertook restoration efforts. This cultural and historical significance prompted UNESCO to designate Sintra as a World Heritage Site in 1995.

Since the 1970s, extensive archaeological excavations have been ongoing at the Castelo dos Mouros and in its vicinity. These investigations have yielded significant insights into the fortress’s storied past and the various historical events it has witnessed through the centuries.

Visiting Hours

The Castelo dos Mouros is accessible to visitors from Monday to Sunday between 9:30 am and 6 pm. Please be aware that these hours can be subject to alterations.

It is important to note that the last entry is permitted at 5:30 pm.

Admission for Children Under 6

Children younger than 6 years can enter free of charge; however, it is necessary to visit the ticket office at the Castelo dos Mouros to obtain their tickets.
