Explore the magnificent ancient temples, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and unravel their fascinating history with this exclusive Mahabalipuram day excursion from Chennai.
Day Trip Highlights
Your journey will commence with a pickup from your hotel in Chennai at 9 am. From there, we will embark on a two-hour drive to one of the most storied sites along India’s eastern coastline, Mahabalipuram.
Upon our arrival, we will start unveiling the extensive monumental complex, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our first destination will be the renowned Coastal Temple, dating back to the 8th century. This revered area comprises three sanctuaries, dedicated respectively to Vishnu and two to Shiva. Did you know it ranks among the oldest five-storey buildings in India?
The adventure continues at the five temples known as Pancha Rathas. These remarkable structures, hewn from large granite blocks, carry a unique sanctity. Notably, during the devastating tsunami of 2004, the Pancha Rathas remarkably withstood the disaster.
Following a lunch break on your own, we will marvel at the intricate bas-reliefs of the Sri Sthal Sayana Perumal temple. These carvings illustrate two significant narratives in Hinduism: the descent of the Ganges and the penance of Arjuna. Are you familiar with these stories? We’ll dive into their meanings!
By 6 pm, we will return to your hotel in Chennai.
