Embark on a journey to unveil two treasures of Serbian cultural heritage on this excursion to the monasteries of Ži?a and Studenica. Experience the richness of Byzantine art and the stunning natural landscapes that Serbia has to offer!
Excursion Overview
We will start our expedition by picking you up from your accommodation in Belgrade at the designated time and making our way to the Ži?a Monastery, located approximately two hours from the city.
Upon arrival at Ži?a, we will explore this significant site established by King Stefan Nemanja, who is recognized as the first king of Serbia. Interestingly, he designated this monastery as the coronation site for his heirs, which has earned it the title of the Coronation Monastery.
As we pass through the grand red entrance and enter the complex, we will delve into its remarkable architecture and frescoes, which, despite suffering from Ottoman invasions, the ravages of World War II, fires, and earthquakes, continue to narrate tales of faith and authority.
During our one-hour visit, we will gain insights into the legacy of the Nemanji? dynasty, who played a pivotal role in establishing the medieval Serbian state, while also enjoying breathtaking views of the Ibar Gorge.
Next, we will proceed to Studenica, an extraordinary gem in the Valley of the Kings and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in the late 12th century, this monastery stands as the largest Orthodox establishment in Serbia. The main church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, contains one of the finest collections of Byzantine artworks from the 13th and 14th centuries.
Before concluding our excursion, there will be a 45-minute break for lunch at a local restaurant.
We will then embark on our return journey to Belgrade, concluding our enriching day with a drop-off at your hotel after approximately 10 hours of exploration.
