30 October: Evening Tour of San Francisco de Campeche & Altars

As twilight descends, we’ll gather in the heart of San Francisco de Campeche to embark on our nighttime tour for the Day of the Dead. Throughout this visit to the renowned walled city, we will explore the traditions, tales, and folklore that characterize Campeche at this unique time of year.

Wandering through illuminated colonial buildings, fortifications, and historical sites, we will hear captivating local stories. Key highlights include the Fort of San Miguel, the impressive Cathedral of San Francisco de Campeche, the central Plaza de la Independencia, Bastion of San Carlos, the historic Puerta de Tierra, Church of San Román, and Casa 6 museum.

To conclude our evening honoring the Day of the Dead, we’ll visit the vibrant altars positioned in the Historic Centre. Here, we will learn about the offerings, the cempasúchil flowers, and the sacred objects through which locals honor their departed relatives. As a final touch, we’ll indulge in some local delicacies.

This cultural experience will wrap up after approximately five hours.

31 October: Exploring Camino Real, Mayan Traditions & Day of the Dead Parade

At dawn, our journey begins at the renowned Camino Real, also known as the Artisan Route, where we will embark on an engaging cultural, culinary, and archaeological tour through some of the most authentic towns of the area.

Our first destination will be the Calkiní community center before we head to the charming village of Bécal, celebrated for its handcrafted jipijapa hats. Did you know these artisans weave these hats in humid caves to maintain the pliability of the palm fibers? It’s a remarkable ancient skill!

Continuing on, we will pass through Hecelchakán and arrive at Pomuch, a town steeped in ancestral veneration. Here, you will not only learn about their unique customs for honoring the deceased, but also sample their famous traditional bread, baked using time-honored stone ovens.

In the afternoon, we'll return to the city to experience the vibrant Day of the Dead Parade in Campeche, where the streets come alive with music, catrinas, and folk artistry.

This remarkable celebration will conclude approximately twelve hours later.
