Day Trip to Danube Bend: Esztergom, Visegrád & Szentendre
Your adventure begins near the parliament building in Budapest, where you’ll board a comfortable coach heading north towards Esztergom. This enchanting city served as Hungary's capital between the 10th and 13th centuries and holds significance as the center of the Roman Catholic Church. Here, you will visit the majestic Esztergom Basilica, the largest cathedral in Hungary. With your insightful English-speaking guide, you will enter this magnificent neoclassical structure and enjoy stunning views of the Danube River and southern Slovakia from Castle Hill. The tour in Esztergom will take approximately one hour.
The next destination is Visegrád, famous for its medieval fortress situated on a steep elevation, as well as the summer palace of King Matthias Corvinus. As you explore, you will pass the remarkable ruins of Visegrád Castle and take in the exquisite vistas of the Danube Bend. After the guided tour, you will have about an hour for independent exploration of the town.
Post-lunch, you will continue to Szentendre, also recognized as the Artists’ Village. Here, join a one-hour guided walking tour through the Old Town, followed by some leisure time to roam through the local souvenir shops or visit its renowned museums.
Journey Back to Budapest
It’s important to mention that during the months of May through September, every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the return trip to Budapest will occur by boat, contingent on the Danube's water levels. Should conditions prevent this, the return will be via road transportation.
Due to the current low water levels of the Danube River, the return from Szentendre to Budapest will be by bus until September 30, 2026, instead of by boat. The day trip's itinerary will remain unchanged.
