Discover the legacy of St. Francis of Assisi, celebrated as one of Italy's beloved patron saints, through this engaging guided tour in Assisi. Traverse the city's key streets, squares, and churches integral to this pilgrimage hub.
Assisi Guided Tour
As the birthplace of St. Francis, Assisi serves as a significant pilgrimage site, captivating even those who may not share the faith. Over a span of 2 to 3 hours, we will wander through the city, retracing the history surrounding the founder of the Franciscan order and the order dedicated to Saint Clare.
Our journey commences at the Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, where we'll initiate our guided exploration of Assisi. Here, we will delve into the life of Saint Clare, interred in a nearby location.
Next, we will visit the Chiesa Nuova, built on the very site where St. Francis's family residence once stood. While this historical home has been transformed into a church, the three original doorways and the ground floor where St. Francis once labored remain intact.
Continuing our exploration, we will make our way to the Temple of Minerva, situated in Piazza del Comune. Its origins trace back to the first century BC, originally constructed in honor of the goddess of war. It was later converted into a church, much like the famed Agrippa Pantheon in Rome.
After departing from the temple, we will proceed to one of the highlights of our visit, the Upper Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, followed by the Lower Basilica of St. Francis. We will dedicate thirty minutes to each basilica, allowing ample time to appreciate the intricate details that contribute to this UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Upper Basilica's bright and airy ambiance stands in stark contrast to the darker, more confined Lower Basilica. Within its walls, we will explore numerous chapels and the crypt housing the remains of St. Francis.
Our guided experience concludes in front of the Lower Basilica of St. Francis, having uncovered the principal highlights of this remarkable city.
